Chapter Seventeen
-Drew-
Sawyer dashes into the house, leaving me staring at his mum. I canât believe sheâs letting her son go with me to track a bear that just about made us lunch. People here are proud of being Alaskan grown. Are situations like this what they mean by that? Where mums donât coddle their kids but let others take them on adventures so they can grow and learn? The weight of that responsibility and the trust Denali gives slumps across my shoulders like Iâm carrying a humpback whale.
âYou both are a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic if you think that precious child is going after a rabid bear.â Mumâs frantic voice pitches higher as she clutches the neckline of her dress.
âMum, itâll be okay. Weâll keep our distance.â I check my phone to make sure itâs got enough charge.
Donât want the battery dying when weâre tracking a killer bear. Okay, that was dramatic. My mum is rubbing off on me.
âYouâre right. Youâll keep your distance inside that house. I donât understand why thereâs a need to go after the thing. Let the professionals do it. Itâs too dangerous, especially for a kid.â Mum swats Vicâs hand away as he cups her elbow to lead her inside.
âSawyerâs right. The bear needs to be followed.â Denali pats Mum on the shoulder. âDonât worry. Sawyerâs been around bears his entire life. Heâll keep Drew safe.â
She winks at me before striding to her car. Iâm hoping she meant that as a joke, though the kid probably could. There is no way Iâll let anything happen to him, even if it means we have to lose the bearâs trail.
âNo wonder you like this place so much. Itâs like those wild west movies you insist on watching.â Mum leans her cheek on her hand and closes her eyes.
As welcomes go, this isnât the way Iâd hoped her first visit would start. Denali marches back, spinning the chamber to her massive revolver. Mum flinches and bumps into Vic with a squeak. Her eyes go wide at the weapon.
âDo you know how to use this?â Denaliâs question pinches.
Sure, we have strict gun laws in Oz, but that doesnât mean Iâve never shot one. Granted, Iâve only shot at the shooting range, and it was an automatic. But itâs the same. Right?
âYeah.â I donât think I convinced her if the rise of her eyebrow is any indication. âIâve shot loads of rounds with a Sig at the range.â
She just shakes her head and talks me through how her weapon works. I have to say, some guys would be put off by her explaining how to load a gun. Me? I find it enthralling and more than a little attractive. Maybe Iâll let her give me lessons in shooting this particular gun later. Doesnât that usually involve getting close for instruction, or is that just in the movies?
âAre you sure I shouldnât let Sawyer take this?â She glances at Sawyer as he runs up with a can of spray paint and his backpack slung over his shoulders.
